You’d think that cold weather does more damage to a battery than heat. We all remember standing out in the bitter cold clamping jumper cables to dead batteries.

It’s true. Batteries work more sluggishly in colder temperatures than warmer ones, but excessive heat breaks them down and they don’t last as long.

Heat evaporates battery fluid and that leads to the slow decay of the components inside the battery.

Usually the first component to go, the voltage regulator, prevents the battery from overcharging.

A tech at the wireless store counter will tell you keeping your cell phone on the charger all the time will ruin your battery's strength to hold charge. The same is true for car batteries.

Constant overcharging simply leads it to quicker decay.

Keeping the terminal contacts clean and alkaline-free also helps preserve the battery. Debris and alkaline buildup between the terminal posts and cables does not allow the battery to charge effectively, which also chips away at its lifespan.

If you are unsure if your battery is charging correctly, or don't know if your terminals need cleaning, the technicians at Forty Fort Lube can steer you in the right direction.

They can tell you if your battery needs replacing or, depending on the type of battery, they may be able to refill the cells to preserve the one you have.
